The lymphatic system is made up of special vessels, nodes, organs, and fluid that helps your immune system fight off things that can make you sick. It filters and battles bacteria, viruses, cancer, fungi and other harmful things that can cause illness.
Lymphedema happens when lymph fluid builds up in body tissue because the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked. These following things can cause the system to not work well:
Sometimes, symptoms might seem small and you might not even see them on your body. Many people might ignore them, thinking it is just a normal part of their cancer treatment. Sometimes, symptoms show up right away, but other times, they might not come until months or even years after cancer treatment.
Make an appointment for a special training session to learn about manual lymph drainage (MLD). This can make you feel better and your lymphatic system work better. During the session, you'll have a direct therapy session and learn some special ways to manage your lymphedema on your own.(Available in person in the Atlanta, GA region)
Meet with a health professional to guide and educate you in exploring your health habits before, during or after your cancer surgery and/or treatments. (Available nationwide via virtual visit)
